i mourn the passing of #DesmondTutu, a prophet of liberation theology from the heart of sub-saharan africa.
on a subject close to my heart, tutu refused to delegitimize the existence of the state of israel. at the same time, and in light of the right-wing israeli government's recalcitrant denial of the palestinian's rights to a state of their own, tutu endorsed sanctions against israel. to the extent that israel's enemies are not different than what they nominally oppose, the sanctions against israel will not succeed.
but what needs to succeed is tutu's vision of a people's peace between israel and palestine, and it is our task today to fulfill this vision without any further delays.
